Back to School in Mamaroneck: The Kids' Bedroom Reset

A clear room and a clean desk make the first weeks of school smoother. Here is how to get there.

The short answer

Do it in order: sort and declutter first, then clean top to bottom, then set up the desk. Wash bedding, vacuum under the bed and in the closet, and give school supplies a home.

Mamaroneck summers are full: the Firemen's Carnival at Harbor Island Park, evenings on Mamaroneck Avenue, and days at the water. By late August, kids' rooms show it. There is sand in the rug, swim gear in the corner, and a desk covered in everything except schoolwork.

Step 1: Sort

  • Pull outgrown clothes and shoes for donation or storage.
  • Put summer gear, like goggles and beach bags, away for the season.
  • Clear old papers and broken items from the desk and shelves.

Step 2: Clean

  1. Dust from the top: light fixtures, shelves, and the tops of dressers.
  2. Wipe the desk, nightstand, switch plates, and door handles.
  3. Wash sheets, pillowcases, and the comforter or duvet cover.
  4. Vacuum the floor, under the bed, and the closet floor, where sand hides.

Step 3: Set up the desk

A clear surface, a lamp, a pencil cup, and a spot for the backpack are enough. Keep a small bin for papers that come home, and empty it each weekend.

Let kids help

Age-appropriate jobs, like sorting clothes, making the bed, and putting supplies away, help kids keep the room in shape once school starts.

The rest of the house

Bathrooms, the kitchen, and floors are easier to keep up with recurring help during the school year. See our summer sand guide for the end-of-season entry clean, and what biweekly cleaning covers.

Kids' room questions

Should I declutter or clean first?

Declutter first. Cleaning goes faster once surfaces and floors are clear.

How often should kids' sheets be washed?

Weekly is a common routine, and more often if a child is sick.

Do house cleaners clean kids' rooms?

Yes. Bedrooms are part of a regular visit. Picking up toys and clutter beforehand lets the cleaner focus on surfaces and floors.

Do cleaners organize closets?

Organizing is different from cleaning. Ask about it when you request a quote and we'll tell you what we can include.
