The short answer

Empty one shelf at a time, check dates, wipe the shelf, and put back only what you will use. Store flour, grains, and snacks in sealed containers to keep pantry pests out.

Each September, the Yorktown Grange Fair at 99 Moseman Road celebrates the area's farming roots with exhibits, animals, and local food. It is also a good reminder that fall cooking season is here. Before apples, squash, and baking supplies come home, the pantry needs room.

Shelf by shelf

  1. Remove everything from one shelf.
  2. Check dates and discard anything expired, stale, or open too long.
  3. Wipe the shelf and let it dry.
  4. Return items, grouping like with like.

Keep pantry pests out

  • Move flour, rice, oats, and cereal into sealed containers.
  • Check new bags for damage before storing them.
  • Wipe crumbs from corners and shelf edges.
  • Do not store produce like onions and potatoes together in sealed spaces.

Fall produce

Apples, squash, and root vegetables keep best in a cool, dry, ventilated spot. Check them weekly and remove anything soft before it affects the rest.

The rest of the kitchen

While the pantry is open, wipe cabinet fronts and handles and the floor in front of it. For the bigger kitchen jobs, a deep clean before the holidays makes the season easier.
