Spring in Southport: Opening the Guest Cottage

A closed space collects dust, stale air, and the occasional surprise. Here is how to open it right.

The short answer

Air it out, then dust top to bottom, wash all linens, clean the kitchenette and bathroom, check for pests or leaks, and restock basics. Do it a week before the first guest so there is time to fix anything you find.

Southport's historic village, near the harbor and the Pequot Library on Pequot Avenue, has plenty of properties with a guest cottage, carriage house, or suite over the garage. Some host visiting family; others are rented to guests. After a closed winter, these spaces need more than a quick wipe before spring visitors arrive.

Air it out

Open windows on a dry day, run fans, and let the space breathe while you work. Check for musty smells or signs of leaks, and note anything that needs repair.

The opening checklist

  • Dust ceiling fans, fixtures, shelves, and sills.
  • Wash all bedding and towels, including stored extras.
  • Clean the kitchenette: refrigerator, microwave, counters, and sink.
  • Clean the bathroom thoroughly and run every faucet.
  • Vacuum, including under the bed and furniture.
  • Check for signs of insects or mice and address them.

Restock

  1. Paper goods, soap, and a few cleaning supplies.
  2. Fresh linens and towels.
  3. Coffee, tea, and basics if you provide them.

For rentals
