Closing Up a Lake Mahopac House for Fall: The Cleaning Checklist

The street fair on Route 6N is done, the boats are coming out, and the porch furniture needs a home. Close the house the right way.

The short answer

Close a lake house in three passes: outdoors first (porch, furniture, cushions), then the kitchen (refrigerator emptied and cleaned, pantry cleared), then bedrooms and baths (linens washed and stored dry). Leave it clean, dry, and free of food, and the spring opening will be easy.

Once the Mahopac Street Fair and Columbus Day Parade have filled Route 6N on Columbus Day weekend, fall settles in around Lake Mahopac. The boat parades and summer concerts are over, and for many families with a lake house, cottage, or seasonal rental, it is time to close up for the colder months.

A house that is closed clean is far easier to open in spring. Here is how to do it.

Pass 1: porch and outdoor areas

  • Wipe down outdoor furniture and let it dry fully before storing.
  • Wash or brush off cushions and store them somewhere dry.
  • Sweep screened porches, including corners where leaves collect.
  • Clean grills and store accessories indoors.

Pass 2: kitchen

  • Empty the refrigerator completely, clean the shelves, and follow the manufacturer's guidance if you plan to unplug it and prop the door.
  • Clear the pantry of open food that could attract pests.
  • Clean the oven, microwave, and toaster of crumbs.
  • Wipe cabinets inside and out and empty all trash.

Pass 3: bedrooms and bathrooms

  • Wash all linens and towels and store them fully dry.
  • Vacuum mattresses and under beds where sand and dust collect.
  • Clean bathrooms thoroughly; summer showers leave soap film behind.
  • Dust surfaces, fans, and window sills, and vacuum and mop floors.

Fighting lake-house dampness

Lakefront homes can hold moisture. Leaving everything clean and dry, with doors to closets and cabinets slightly open for air, helps. If you notice signs of mold, that needs a specialist; it is outside a standard cleaning.

If you rent it out

Seasonal and short-term rentals need a full turnover after the last guest, plus restocking or removal of supplies. Our turnover checklist and cleaning fee guide cover the details.

Getting help with the close-up

A deep clean at the end of the season covers inside appliances, cabinets, bathrooms, fixtures, and floors. You do not need to be there; a lockbox or key works. Let us know if the water or power will be shut off, since the team needs both to clean.
