Hosting Thanksgiving in Monroe: Oven and Kitchen Prep

A clean oven means no smoke alarm surprises. Here is the kitchen prep plan for the week before.

The short answer

Clean the oven at least several days before Thanksgiving, not the night before, and run it empty afterward to check for smoke. Then clear refrigerator space, clean counters and the sink, and empty the dishwasher before cooking starts.

From Stepney to the neighborhoods off Fan Hill Road and near Wolfe Park, plenty of Monroe families host Thanksgiving. The oven will work harder that day than any other day of the year. If last year's spills are still baked on, they will smoke. That is why oven prep belongs early in the week, or the week before.

The oven

  1. Check your oven manual before using any cleaner or the self-clean cycle.
  2. Remove racks and soak them separately.
  3. Clean the interior and the inside of the door glass.
  4. Wipe the door seal gently; do not soak it.
  5. Run the oven empty for a few minutes to check for smoke or odors.

If you use self-clean, run it several days ahead and stay home while it runs. Ventilate the kitchen.

Refrigerator space

  • Discard old leftovers and expired items.
  • Wipe shelves and drawers.
  • Clear one full shelf for the turkey and another for sides.

The rest of the kitchen

Wipe the stovetop and range hood, clear counters, and start with an empty dishwasher and sink. Set up a landing spot for guests' dishes.
