The short answer
Protect the floor before the tree comes in (a waterproof mat under the stand and a tree bag under the skirt), keep the stand watered so it drops fewer needles, vacuum needles every couple of days, and wipe sap and water drips right away. When it is time to take it down, bag it before carrying it out.
New Milford's holiday season is hard to beat. The Christmas trees that stretch down the middle of the Village Green get lit in a ceremony each winter, and the shops and the Bank Street Theater just off the green fill up with holiday visitors. It is also the moment many families bring home a real tree of their own.
Real trees smell wonderful and look great. They also drop needles, drip sap, and sit in water for weeks on top of your floor. A little prep keeps the mess small.
Before the tree comes in
- Pick the spot away from heat sources and high-traffic paths.
- Lay a waterproof mat or tray under the stand to protect wood floors from spills and condensation.
- Place a tree removal bag under the stand, hidden by the skirt, for easy takedown.
- Shake the tree outside or ask the seller to shake it, to drop loose needles before it is inside.
During the season
- Water daily. A well-watered tree holds its needles better. Check the stand level every day.
- Vacuum needles every couple of days. A handheld vacuum or a crevice tool works well around the base.
- Wipe drips immediately. Standing water can mark and damage wood floors.
- Check under the skirt weekly for hidden water and needles.
Sap on hands, floors, and furniture
Sap is sticky but manageable. Wipe it promptly while it is soft. For floors and furniture, test any cleaner in a hidden spot first and follow the surface manufacturer's guidance, especially on finished wood. Wear gloves when handling the tree to keep sap off your hands.
Taking it down
- Remove ornaments and lights first.
- Siphon or soak up water from the stand before moving it.
- Pull the removal bag up over the tree and carry it out bagged.
- Vacuum the area thoroughly, including under nearby furniture where needles travel.
- Check the floor under the mat for moisture and let it air dry.
Follow town guidance for tree disposal or recycling.
The January reset
Needles find their way everywhere: rug edges, heating vents, under the sofa. A post-holiday cleaning catches them, along with the kitchen after weeks of hosting. See our January reset guide for the full list.
