Fireplace Season in Easton: Cleaning the Hearth and Mantel

The fireplace is the heart of the room in fall. Here is how to keep the area around it clean.

The short answer

Before the first fire, have the chimney inspected by a qualified professional, then dust the mantel, wipe the surround, and sweep and vacuum the hearth. During the season, keep ash and wood debris contained so they do not spread.

Easton is a rural town, with farms and winding roads like Sport Hill Road (Route 59), Center Road, and Morehouse Road, and the historic Town Hall at 225 Center Road. When fall nights turn cool, many homes here light the first fire of the season. Before that happens, the hearth and mantel deserve attention.

Safety first

Chimney inspection and sweeping are jobs for a qualified chimney professional, not a house cleaner. Schedule that first, and never clean inside a firebox that has been used recently; ash can stay hot for a long time.

The mantel

  • Clear decor and dust the surface.
  • Wipe frames, candlesticks, and clocks before putting them back.
  • Use a cleaner suited to the material: wood, stone, or painted finish.

The surround and hearth

  1. Dust the surround from top to bottom.
  2. Sweep loose debris from the hearth.
  3. Vacuum with care. Only use a vacuum on cold, fully extinguished material.
  4. Wipe stone or brick with a cleaner appropriate for the surface.
  5. Wipe fireplace tools and the screen.

Firewood and bark

Indoor wood racks shed bark, dust, and sometimes insects. Bring in only what you will burn in a day or two, put a mat under the rack, and sweep around it often.

The rest of the room

Fireplace use leaves a fine layer of dust on nearby surfaces. Dust shelves and lampshades more often in winter and vacuum upholstery near the hearth. Our fall mud and leaves guide covers the entry side of the season.

Fireplace area questions

Do house cleaners clean fireplaces?

We clean the mantel, surround, and hearth area. Chimney and firebox work should be done by a qualified chimney professional.

How often should I have my chimney inspected?

Follow the guidance of a qualified chimney professional; many recommend an annual inspection.

Can I vacuum fireplace ash?

Only when it is completely cold, and ideally with a vacuum designed for ash. When in doubt, leave ash removal to a professional.

Why is there more dust in winter?

Fireplace use, dry heat, and closed windows all add to household dust. Dust a little more often during the season.
