Art Show Season in Armonk: How to Dust Framed Art Safely

Frames and glass collect dust, but the wrong cleaner can damage art. Here is the safe way.

The short answer

Use a soft, dry duster or microfiber cloth on frames, and for glass, spray cleaner onto the cloth, never onto the glass. Never wipe the surface of an unglazed painting; leave that to a conservator.

Each fall, the Armonk Outdoor Art Show brings artists from around the region to Community Park at 205 Business Park Drive, just off Route 22. Many visitors go home with a new piece for the wall. Once it is hung, it joins the long list of things in a house that quietly collect dust.

Frames

  • Dust with a soft, dry duster or microfiber cloth.
  • Work gently around carved or gilded details; a soft brush helps.
  • Avoid water and sprays on wood or gilded frames.

Glass and acrylic

  1. Spray a small amount of cleaner onto a cloth, not the glass, so liquid cannot run behind the frame.
  2. Wipe gently, then buff with a dry cloth.
  3. For acrylic, use a cleaner made for acrylic; some glass cleaners can cloud it.

Unglazed paintings

Canvas and paper without glass are delicate. At most, a very soft, clean brush can remove loose dust. Valuable or fragile pieces should be cared for by a professional conservator.

The gallery wall

Dust the tops of frames, which collect the most, and the wall around them. Check that hangers are secure, and keep art out of direct sun and away from heat and humidity.

How often

A light dusting of frames during regular cleaning is enough for most homes. Ask your cleaner to skip any piece you would rather handle yourself. For more on caring for delicate pieces, see our wood furniture care guide.
