The short answer

Clean a new home after the previous occupant leaves and before your boxes arrive. Focus on the places you will fill first: inside kitchen cabinets and drawers, the refrigerator and oven, bathroom vanities and medicine cabinets, closets and shelves, then floors throughout. An empty home is the easiest it will ever be to clean.

Even when a previous owner or tenant cleaned before leaving, most people want a fresh start: their own clean, on their own standard, before anything goes into a cabinet. A move-in clean is that start, and timing is everything.

What does move-in ready mean?

Move-in ready means you can unpack straight into the cabinets, closets, and refrigerator without wiping anything first. It has the same scope as a move-out clean, just booked from the other side of the move.

Move-in cleaning checklist

Kitchen first

  • Inside every cabinet, drawer, and shelf
  • Inside the refrigerator, freezer, and oven
  • Inside the dishwasher and microwave
  • Counters, backsplash, and sink

Bathrooms

  • Inside vanities and medicine cabinets
  • Toilet, tub, shower, and sink
  • Mirrors, fixtures, and floors

Bedrooms and closets

  • Closet shelves, rods, and floors
  • Window sills, tracks, and interior glass
  • Ceiling fans, light fixtures, and blinds

Whole home

  • Switches, door handles, and doors
  • Baseboards and HVAC vents
  • Inside laundry appliances
  • Floors, wall to wall

This matches the vacant-home checklist in our move-in and move-out cleaning.

How to time a move-in clean

  1. Get the key date. Book for after the closing or lease start and before the movers.
  2. Leave a buffer. A day between the clean and the truck gives floors time to dry and you time to check.
  3. Confirm utilities. The team needs water and power.
  4. Arrange access. You do not need to be there; a lockbox, key, or building code works.

Evening and weekend appointments are available when the schedule allows, which helps when move dates are tight.

How long does a move-in clean take?

About the same as a move-out clean: a typical two-bedroom apartment takes about 3 to 4 hours, and larger homes take longer. We include an estimate in your quote.

After you move in

Once boxes are unpacked, a routine schedule keeps the new home feeling new. See deep vs. standard vs. move-out cleaning to pick what comes next. If you are also leaving a home, our move-out cleaning guide covers that side.

What to check when you arrive

Before the movers carry anything in, take a few minutes to walk the empty home:

  • Open every cabinet and drawer in the kitchen and bathrooms
  • Look inside the refrigerator, freezer, oven, and dishwasher
  • Check closet shelves and floors
  • Note any damage or repair needs and photograph them for your records
  • Find the water shutoff, breaker panel, and thermostat while the rooms are empty

Doing this before unpacking makes it much easier to spot problems and to raise them with a landlord or seller.

Unpacking in the right order

Unpack the kitchen and bathrooms first, since they were just cleaned inside and they are the rooms you need on day one. Line shelves if you plan to, before dishes go in. Leave bedroom closets and storage for later in the week.
