The short answer
Even new units can have fine dust on sills, inside cabinets, in vents, and on floors. Wipe cabinets and shelves, clean appliances, dust sills and fixtures, and vacuum and mop before boxes and furniture go in.
Stamford has seen a lot of new apartment buildings, especially in Harbor Point and the South End, and along Washington Boulevard downtown. New construction is exciting, but finishing work often leaves a fine layer of dust that does not show until you run a hand along a sill or open a cabinet.
What to check on day one
- Window sills, frames, and tracks.
- Inside kitchen cabinets, drawers, and closet shelves.
- Appliance interiors, including the dishwasher filter area.
- Light fixtures, vent covers, and the tops of door frames.
- Floors, especially along baseboards and in corners.
The cleaning order
- Dust high: fixtures, vents, and door tops.
- Wipe cabinets, shelves, and closets.
- Clean appliances inside and out.
- Clean bathrooms, including inside vanities.
- Wipe sills and baseboards.
- Vacuum, then mop.
Report issues first
Before you clean, note any damage, paint drips, or unfinished work and report it to building management. Cleaning will not fix construction defects, and it is better to have them documented.
Dust that keeps coming back
If dust keeps reappearing for weeks, it may be settling from vents or ongoing work nearby. Our guide to dust after a renovation explains why and what helps.
Then unpack
Once surfaces are clean, unpack kitchen and bath items first so you can live comfortably while the rest comes together.

New apartment questions
Do new apartments need cleaning before move-in?
Often, yes. Finishing work can leave fine dust in cabinets, on sills, and on floors, even when a unit looks clean.
What if I find damage while cleaning?
Stop and report it to building management first so it is documented.
Is move-in cleaning the same as post-construction cleaning?
They overlap. A new unit usually needs move-in detail plus extra attention to construction dust. Tell us the building is new when you request a quote.
