Cleaning Guide

Which Room Should You Clean First?

The order matters less than the rules you follow inside each room. Here are both.

The short answer

Start with the room that matters most to you, usually the kitchen. Inside each room, work top to bottom and dry to wet, and do the floors last on your way out.

If you have one free afternoon in a home near Underhill Avenue or off Route 118, where you start decides what gets finished. Most people run out of time before they run out of rooms, so put the room that bothers you most first.

Start with the kitchen

The kitchen gets the most use and shows dirt fastest. Starting there means the most visible room is done even if the afternoon gets cut short. Run the dishwasher first so it works while you clean.

A simple order for the rest

  1. Kitchen: counters, stovetop, sink, and appliance fronts.
  2. Bathrooms: spray the shower and toilet first and let the cleaner sit while you do mirrors and sinks.
  3. Living areas: dust shelves and surfaces, then furniture.
  4. Bedrooms: dust, change sheets, and clear surfaces.
  5. Floors: vacuum and mop last, working toward the door.

Inside every room

  • Top to bottom: ceiling fans and high shelves before counters, counters before floors.
  • Dry to wet: dust and vacuum before you wipe and mop, so you don't turn dust into mud.
  • Back to front: start at the far side of the room and finish at the door.

Cleaning order questions

Should I clean the kitchen or bathroom first?

Start with the room that matters most to you. Many people start with the kitchen because it shows dirt fastest.

Why clean top to bottom?

Dust and debris fall as you clean, so working downward means you only clean the floor once.

Should floors be cleaned last?

Yes. Vacuum and mop last, working toward the door.

Can I tell the team which rooms to prioritize?

Yes. Share your priorities when you book or at the first visit.
